The Energy Information Administration (EIA) collects and publishes data at several different geographic levels (depending on the data series), including:
- National
- Census Division
- State or U.S. Territory
While EIA posts State-level data throughout its website, there are two primary places to start your search for State energy information.
State Energy Profiles
State Energy Profiles summarize all of EIAs State-level and fuel-specific energy data for each State. Profiles are updated monthly and include:
- Energy Maps that display each States energy infrastructure and renewable energy potential
- Quick Facts that provide the most important State energy information
- Written Overviews explain how fossil fuels, renewables, and alternative energy sources affect each States energy markets
- Data Tables that provide the most current State-level statistics from EIA surveys
- Associated Links take users to specific web pages on which EIAs detailed data and time series can be found
- State Data Directory Pages provide comprehensive lists by subject of all of EIAs State-level information plus direct links to the information.
State Energy Profiles also include data and information on the following U.S. territories:
State Energy Data System
The State Energy Data System provides annual time-series estimates of State-level energy consumption, prices, expenditures, and production. The full set of tables and data files are updated annually.
The estimates provide multi-dimensional information for the following:
- Concepts: Consumption in physical units and British thermal units (Btu); prices in dollars per million Btu; expenditures in million nominal dollars; and production in physical unit and Btu
- Energy Sources: Coal; natural gas; 10 major petroleum products, other petroleum products, and total petroleum; nuclear fuel; renewable energy including hydroelectric power, geothermal energy, solar energy, wind energy, wood and waste; and total energy
- Consumption Sectors: Residential, commercial, industrial, transportation, electric power, and total
- Geography: 50 States, District of Columbia, and the United States
- Time periods: Consumption (1960-2007), prices (1970-2007), expenditures (1970-2007), production (1960-2006)
