Carbon Dioxide Emissions Are Expected to Increase
World carbon dioxide emissions are expected to increase by 1.4% annually between 2006 and 2030. Much of the increase in these emissions is expected to occur in the developing world where emerging economies, including China and India, fuel economic development with fossil energy. Emissions from the developing countries are expected to grow above the world average at 2.2% annually between 2006 and 2030.
The United States produced about 20% of global carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels in 2006, the last year for which global data are available. The United States accounts for this share primarily because the U.S. economy is the largest in the world and it meets 85% of its energy needs through burning fossil fuels. The United States is projected to lower its carbon intensity by 39% from 2006 to 2030.
